Gout happens when uric acid builds up and crystals form in a joint, most often the big toe. A serum uric acid test measures the level of uric acid in the blood and is a common first step when the doctor suspects gout. It is done along with the clinical examination and is interpreted with it, because a high level does not always cause an attack and a normal level does not completely rule gout out.
